How to Safely Use a Portable Track Pin Press

If you’ve ever had a machine break down in the field, you know how tempting it can be to try to make a quick fix yourself. Often that means grabbing a sledgehammer or other tool and taking a few whacks at the broken pin.

For reasons that should be obvious, this isn’t a great idea. You’re much better off using a track pin press.

Why You Should Keep the Hammer in the Toolbox

Track pin presses are a much safer alternative to using sledgehammers or other strong-arm methods when removing and installing track pins. They use hydraulic pressure to apply force to the pin, which eliminates the need for manual hammering. This reduces the risk of injury, especially to the hands and arms, and prevents damage to the equipment.

WTC Machinery offers portable track pin presses designed specifically to make field operations easier and safer. They are available in different sizes and configurations, with ratings from 100 tons on up to 250 tons, giving you plenty of power for even the largest dozers and excavators.

Our portable track pin presses are available as standalone units or can be paired with hydraulic pumps. Optional features include pressure gauges and lifting slings for added safety. You can visit our Portable Pin Presses page for more information.

A Guide to Safe Portable Track Pin Press Use

  • Of course, even when using a portable track pin press for in-field repairs, you’ll still need to make sure you know what you’re doing! Here are some safe ways to use track pin presses in lieu of sledgehammers and other manual methods.
  • Use the correct press for the job. There are different types of track pin presses, each designed for a specific size and type of track pin. Make sure to use the correct press to avoid damaging the pin or the press (or the equipment itself).
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions. Each track pin press comes with a set of operating and safety instructions. Be sure to read the manual and follow the instructions to a T to ensure safe operation. Don’t take shortcuts!
  • Inspect the track pin press thoroughly before using it, looking for any damage, loose parts, or wear and tear that could impede performance. Perform any necessary repairs before proceeding, even if this means returning to the shop and saving the job for another day.
  • Wear proper safety gear. When using a track pin press, personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential. This includes, at a minimum, gloves, safety glasses, long pants, and hearing protection if required.
  • Use caution. When using a track pin press, it is important to use caution and avoid applying too much pressure. Operate the pin press in a slow and controlled manner, being sure to avoid any sudden movements.

Additionally, it’s crucial you make sure the press is properly secured before use. This helps prevent it from tipping over or moving during operation. A blocking pin should be used to support the track pin while pressing it out. This will help prevent the pin from flying out and causing injury.

Above all else, be aware of your surroundings. Make sure there is enough space around the press to operate it safely.

If you are unsure about how to use a portable track pin press, ask for help from a qualified individual. Never assume you can “figure it out” yourself; if you’ve never used one before, it’s a good idea to practice first.

The undercarriage of heavy equipment is the system of components that allow the machine to move. It includes the tracks, chains, sprockets, rollers, idlers, and shoes. The undercarriage is subjected to a lot of wear and tear, so it's important to inspect and repair it regularly.

Here are some of the signs that your heavy equipment undercarriage may need repair:

  • Vibrations
  • Noises
  • Reduced traction
  • Increased wear on the tracks or chains
  • Loose or damaged components

If you notice any of these signs, it's important to have your undercarriage inspected by a qualified technician. Early repair can help prevent more serious damage and downtime.

There are a few different ways to repair a heavy equipment undercarriage. The most common method is to replace the worn or damaged components. In some cases, it may be possible to repair the components.

The cost of undercarriage repair will vary depending on the type of equipment, the severity of the damage, and the cost of the parts.

Conclusion:

Proper maintenance is the best way to prevent undercarriage problems. Here are a few tips for keeping your undercarriage in good condition:

Workplace Safety – the pain in the a$$ that may prevent a pain in you’re a$$...

We have all worked somewhere that has had a workplace “accident”, right?  Have you ever thought to yourself, “You know what?  That could’ve been prevented if he’d just fill in the blank with appropriate action…”  Well you’re right!

“We don’t work in a dangerous environment. We work in a hazardous environment that we make dangerous by not following safe work procedures and wearing our PPE.” -Brad Miles

Now granted, it often seems like a hassle to use the safety door or strap on that safety harness, right?  It would be quicker to just reach in there quick and make whatever adjustment you need without taking the time to shut everything off, then make your changes, and finally to restart what you were doing… But here’s the thing: I’m willing to bet you’d think it was a lot less of a hassle while you’re thinking back on what you could’ve done differently from your hospital bed.

According to OSHA, the number of workplace accidents has been steadily rising over the past 15 years, with 2016 having the highest number of incidents since 2003!  And keep in mind, that’s only the reported incidents…

It’s our philosophy at WTC Machinery that if we go the extra mile to ensure that our equipment leaves our facility with as much thought put into end-user safety as possible, then we are helping our customers ensure a safer workplace for their employees.  We install secondary safety switches and doors, and use remote controls whenever possible on our machines in an effort to minimize operator contact with moving parts during operation.  Check out our Products pages to see our safety features for yourself!

    • What is a Track Press? Posted 9 months ago
What is a Track Press?  Unless you’ve spent a lot of time around excavators, bulldozers, tanks, or other machinery that utilizes tracks for movement, you’ve probably never heard of a track press. This essential piece of equipment is common in the construction and mining industries, where lifting and movement of heavy materials occurs on a daily basis.  What Does a Track Pin Press Do?  A track press, also known as a track pin press, is a specialized tool used in heavy equipment maintenance and repair. It is designed to remove and install track pins, bushings, and links on tracked vehicles, such as bulldozers, excavators, and crawler cranes.  The tracks of these heavy machines consist of multiple interconnected links, and over time, the pins and bushings wear out or become damaged due to the intense use and harsh operating conditions. A track pin press makes replacing and repairing these components easier and more efficient.  How Does a Track Press Work?  A track press typically consists of a hydraulic system that exerts substantial force to loosen or tighten the old pins and bushings from the track links ...
